“Now very much against her will, she thought of the way Jace had looked at her then, the blaze of faith in his eyes, his belief in her. He had always thought she was strong. He had showed it in everything he did, in every look and every touch. Simon had faith in her too, yet when he’d held her, it had been as if she were something fragile, something made of delicate glass. But Jace had held her with all the strength he had, never wondering if she could take it–he’d known she was as strong has he was.” - city of glass
i don’t even go here but that’s an important concept–a man in love with you who also respects your strength. i was rewatching season 1–and 1x08-1x12 are all clary running the show and jace being like “yeah you look ready!” like at no point does he try to compete with her by putting her down so he can be the big protective hero. and it’s NOT because she’s already an established badass fighter like izzy–she clearly has none of their fighting skills and knows nothing about the shadow world, or because he doesn’t want to protect her–he throws himself into the fray (ha) for her immediately from the moment they met because i want to protect you is NOT equivalent to you are weak and can’t be allowed to be autonomous. and maybe that’s what chivalry is–equating those two.
