This show literally packages misogyny as being funny and laughable provided it‘s “Geeks” doing it
watching this was SO upsetting
i almost cried a little just because this guy is so spot on
bonus points for a soupçon of transmisogyny
I like how it calls out how if Howard was a “Macho” character his behvaiour would be seen by everyone as horrifying and predatory but because he’s a “Nerd” it’s somehow funny/endearing because…what, he’s not an actual physical threat because he’s so weak and scrawny so that makes the misogyny and rape culture okay?
And how it notes that the show makes the ONLY POC character in the main cast be alternately be either the most condescendingly sexist and openly patriarchal and basically portraying him as a sex craving asshole who doesn’t know how to behave around people or what’s sexually appropriate (When he’s drunk) and also saying that he’s pitiful and useless around all these Pretty White Women (When he’s sober)
Like, well done show, that’s two gross and ugly stereotypes rolled into one character way to go
A good video, though I wish they had addressed one of the show’s meta-misogynistic elements: the fact the Penny, the show’s primary female character, was never given a last name until season nine, when she married Leonard and took his last name! (They didn’t even reveal what her last name was when her father showed up in season 4, or in s8 when she & Leonard were trying to make sure they knew everything about each other before getting married.)
There is a disparaging amount of overlap in the Venn Diagram of “Geek/Nerd Culture” and “Rape Culture,” and this illustrates that well.
