copperbadge, I thought you might be interested in the art-crime documentary recs.
Neat! I’m a big fan of The Blotter Presents and intrigued by the CIA scandle over The Last Narc as well. I’ll have to check out The Painter And The Thief.Â
So in the last day or two I’ve watched:Â
The Art of the Steal, 2009 - as the article linked above says, it’s more about probate violation than art theft, but it’s interesting, and beautifully shot. I find myself torn now - I’d love to see the Barnes collection, but I don’t want to support the people who so thoroughly defied Barnes’ last wishes
Art and Craft, 2014 - I’m conflicted about this. Mark Landis is so very clearly unwell, and I can’t help but feel he’s being taken advantage of, both by the filmmakers and by the gallery that hosts his show at the end. But the story itself is fascinating. If anyone has book recs or articles about him that are worth checking out, please let me know!Â
Exit Through the Gift Shop, 2010 - I’d missed this when it first came out, and though I know of Banksy, I had no idea what this film was actually about. It’s…bizarre, and fascinating, and in some ways, incredibly depressing. (that rather depends on your impression of Thierry Guetta as an artist).Â
It’s been a nice change of pace from the other kinds of things I’ve been watching on lockdown - though fits in rather neatly with the Leverage rewatch I just finished…
