If you want to make Jewish people in your community feel welcome, I suggest:

1. Stop making a big deal out of Hanukkah. We don’t, unless it’s as a push-back against the constant pressure to DO CHRISTMAS.

2. When planning protests, rallies, events, meetings and marches, make sure they’re not on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, or the first and last days of Pesach. (Also Eid, for that matter.)

If you don’t know why I mention those holidays, or when they are in the year, read up on those instead of assuming that singing “I have a Little Dreidel” at a Christmas concert covers your bases for inclusion.

That’s a great hat. Hey. I really don’t care if there’s a hole in it.

This designer knits sweaters for Marvel superheroes:

How do I get this guy’s job? :)

This bugged me the first time I saw this, but now it REALLY bugs me.

Women knitters outnumber men knitters like 99 to 1. (OK, maybe an exaggeration, but at least 40 or 50 to 1.) There are TONS of geeky women knitters out there. Why did Marvel hire a dude to knit for them over all the incredible women out there? Even for an activity that’s stereotypically feminine, they hire a man.

And then I actually went and read it, and I saw this:

“I’m a big ‘Project Runway’ fan, so for me it’s about that unconventional challenge,” Bennett says. “You know, give me some plastic bags and let me knit something out of it.”

Dammit, dude, THAT’S ALREADY AN ENTIRE FUCKING THING. It’s called PLARN (plastic yarn). People cut up plastic grocery bags and turn them into yarn and knit or crochet stuff with it. Reusable grocery bags (which is awesomely meta), bedrolls and sleeping mats, all-weather things, hats, purses, shoes, pretty clothes, Christmas tree angels, Easter baskets… This is not radical. There are hundreds of hours of YouTube videos on this shit. Here, have a Pinterest board.

STOP PRETENDING TO BE A GODDAMN MAVERICK OUTSIDE-THE-BOX THINKER FOR DOING SHIT TONS OF OTHER PEOPLE ALREADY DO.

And Marvel, goddamn it, go find a TRULY radical knitter to do awesome superhero shit. Shit. You don’t even know what truly awesome knitting looks like.

Oh, goddammit. Now I’ve looked at the sweaters. They will fit precisely one (1) shape of man (but at least comes in five sizes), and will look horrible on anyone who is NOT ALREADY shaped like a carrot/Dorito/triangle-food-of-choice. They’re not particularly interesting, although they do use very nice yarn and patterns that actually require significant skill (stranded colorwork, cable knits, designing the patterns to begin with). And they start at $1,095.00. And go up to $1,495.00.

Let’s say that again. They start at Eleven. Hundred. Dollars. For something that, yes, takes skill to make, and yes, the creator should be compensated appropriately for the time and skill that went into it. But how many women do you think could get away with charging that much for something many grannies can make? (Not because what grannies do is automatically easy! Because we devalue what they do.)

This is SO MUCH white male fucking privilege.

I am SO FUCKING PISSED.

I don’t want to be rich, I just want to be comfy.

Want to have one really nice set of plates and silverware for company and Thanksgiving.

Want to be able to buy a new outfit and a good bra at least a couple times a year.

Want to be able to give “just because” gifts.

Want to burn incense and candles in my home daily, and have nice soaps.

Want to be able to donate to charity frequently and without worry.

Want to buy hardcover books to read and put on a shelf for my kids to read someday.

Want to have candies in bowls for people who visit.

Want to be able to take my young siblings and cousins to a movie and let them get the big popcorn they won’t finish, because there’s magic in just having it.

Want to have a linen closet or at least a linen shelf.

Want to go see live local theater several times a year.

Want to have a bottle of wine or champagne in the house for when I suddenly need to celebrate.

Want to have a kitchen with basic baking supplies so I can bake bread on the weekend, and pies for special occasions.

I just want to be comfy.

That is my definition of ‘wealth’, as contrasted with ‘excess’.  As my mother in law put it – if I can see a little something in a store that I know a friend would love, and just BUY it for them without having to worry about whether I can afford it in the budget, that means I’m well off.  And that?  That is what I want.

For everyone.

Everyone.

the following are concepts that i quickly learned my way around when growing up in fandom, but that seem to have fallen out of use recently. i’d like to propose a revival of…

NOTP: a pairing that, for whatever reason, you simply cannot stand. it can be because the ship repulses you morally, or because you hate one of the characters, or love them both but despise their dynamic – or just because looking at it makes you uncomfortable, for whatever reason.

different from labeling something a “bad ship” in that it implies an entirely personal preference.

calling a ship your NOTP informs others that you really, really, REALLY dislike it, while also acknowledging that you don’t know what other people’s reasons are for shipping it, or what interpretations they may have that makes it work for them.

a cool way of avoiding stuff you hate while also not morally condemning thousands of complete strangers for liking it.

squick: similar to notp, but goes for anything, not just romantic pairings. something you just don’t like, either for specific reasons or just because it irrationally repulses you.

not as severe as a trigger in the sense that it doesn’t cause any extreme and potentially harmful reactions – it’s just something you’d rather not see, because it grosses you the fuck out. and that’s okay.

decent people respect other people’s squicks, while also remembering it’s cool for other people to like things they personally are squicked by.

this works as long as everyone agrees not to be dicks and shove stuff in people’s faces in unwarranted ways.

crackship: a ship that just doesn’t make any sense. there’s absolutely no chance that these characters would ever end up together.

perhaps they’ve never interacted. perhaps they are on opposite sides of a war. perhaps one of them died a thousand years ago. for whatever reason, there’s zero possibility of this becoming canon.

still, you’d like to see how they’d romantically mesh, to explore their dynamic or a what-if scenario – or maybe they’re just two characters you really like to imagine smooching one another.

the fact that it isn’t and never will be canon doesn’t matter, and can even be part of the appeal. it certainly does not invalidate the ship’s existence. the ultimate form of doing something just for fun.

these words all help describe the cool concept of doing stuff you enjoy, while also realizing others may be doing things you hate, but not in order to victimize you personally. live and let live! give people the benefit of the doubt! it’s a good time. we should all try it.

Bring these back. We need them.
