Listen, there is an approximately 0% chance that Luke Skywalker doesn’t speak Huttese. He is fluent in Huttese, and probably in multiple dialects. He was beyond any doubt perfectly capable of communicating with Jabba the Hutt directly, in Jabba’s own language.

But he doesn’t. He insistently uses Basic when talking to Jabba, and he makes Threepio translate Jabba’s words before he replies. He acts for all the world as if he needs the translation.

Which he doesn’t. And Jabba must know damn well that he doesn’t. Because he introduced himself as Luke Skywalker, and that’s an unmistakably Tatooine name (and a slave name, at that).

Conclusion: Literally every word Luke Skywalker speaks throughout his interaction with Jabba if a veiled “fuck you.” Every single word.

#yes. absolutely. hard agree.#80% of luke’s interaction with jabba has to be him seizing the opportunity to realize a fantasy of every single child on tatooine has had#to return to your dusty nowhere hellhole of a planet better and stronger (a JEDI!) and strike down the petty mob boss#that everyone lives in fear of#(I always wondered if they stuck around afterwards if they went to Toshe or something just to stop and refuel; get something to eat#and the people who had known Luke growing up saw—wondered—#Luke is very strange after Yoda; he’s more a Jedi than he was before and I can’t help but think that there#in his hometown #people would notice and people would whisper) (notbecauseofvictories)

I wonder if one of the causes of animosity towards “entitled millennials” is that many millennials are poor people who look rich.  There’s this growing class of people who wear nice clothes, have fancy new electronic gadgets, go out to eat nice food… and will never own a home or have a retirement fund or put a child through college.

It’s so easy to say “if you cut down on the avocado toast maybe you could save up”, and so hard to accept that a house these days is fifty thousand avocado toasts, and that’s why so many of us have just given up.  We don’t treat ourselves because we think the world will take care of us when we get older; we treat ourselves because we know it won’t.  Might as well feel and look good on the way down.

I think you’re absolutely right. And what compounds this image is the fact that fancy new gadgets and nice looking clothes and elevated toast ARE all relatively cheap compared to how they look. The cost of things has gone way down while the price of property has skyrocketed. I can buy a full outfit, a phone case with an external charger embedded, and lunch at a local business for under $50 total, but then I’ll walk home to my apartment because I can’t afford a car payment or a mortgage.

It’s unintentional smoke and mirrors.

Older, better off people also have difficulty understanding the cell phone thing because they remember cell phones being a luxury for thousands of dollars practically yesterday in their personal timeline of the world. They often have sincerely no idea you can get at least a flip phone for $10 and pay as you go.

And foods that used to be “exotic dining” in America like sushi and pho and curry have normalized enough, especially in cities, to be as inexpensive as a typical quick lunch.

reblog if the first musical you ever listened to was not hamilton

*old woman voice* Back in my day, we started with Rodgers and Hammerstein and we LIKED it, by gum!

…no, seriously, I think the first “real” musical I heard was Oklahoma. (I say “real,” because my very first show was a musical written by the local community theater on the base in Spain we lived on, and it was…well, somewhat memorable, but not for the reasons most playwrights want to be memorable.)

Probably something Babs? Hello Dolly?  Funny Girl?  I mean, maybe Brigadoon or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers but probably something Babs.

I can’t even remember what the first musical I ever listened to the soundtrack for. I can tell you that White Christmas has been one of my favorite movies since I was about 6, and my parents had the vinyl records of at least three or four musicals that I clearly remember listening to. I can tell you that I saw my first full opera at about 8 or 9, and ballets long before that. If children are exposed to the arts early, they retain a love and respect for them all their lives. I’m living proof

I don’t remember hearing the Sound of Music for the first time but my mum watches it at least once a year (and in fact, it’s the only musical other than Singin’ In The Rain that she likes). The first musical I remember enjoying - and seeing live with my dad as a teeny tiny Jen, age 6 - was Joseph, in the West End, with Jason Donovan.
