reblog if the first musical you ever listened to was not hamilton

*old woman voice* Back in my day, we started with Rodgers and Hammerstein and we LIKED it, by gum!

…no, seriously, I think the first “real” musical I heard was Oklahoma. (I say “real,” because my very first show was a musical written by the local community theater on the base in Spain we lived on, and it was…well, somewhat memorable, but not for the reasons most playwrights want to be memorable.)

Probably something Babs? Hello Dolly?  Funny Girl?  I mean, maybe Brigadoon or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers but probably something Babs.

I can’t even remember what the first musical I ever listened to the soundtrack for. I can tell you that White Christmas has been one of my favorite movies since I was about 6, and my parents had the vinyl records of at least three or four musicals that I clearly remember listening to. I can tell you that I saw my first full opera at about 8 or 9, and ballets long before that. If children are exposed to the arts early, they retain a love and respect for them all their lives. I’m living proof

I don’t remember hearing the Sound of Music for the first time but my mum watches it at least once a year (and in fact, it’s the only musical other than Singin’ In The Rain that she likes). The first musical I remember enjoying - and seeing live with my dad as a teeny tiny Jen, age 6 - was Joseph, in the West End, with Jason Donovan.
