booooomstrawberries:

Since I’ve not really seen anyone talking about this, I wanted to talk about the Arathim. Specifically, their puppetry. The way their bodies come together isn’t just a creative bit of filmmaking, it’s actually steeped in the history of puppetry. The method of making a face from bodies is a callback to a form of puppetry referred to simply as “Bare-Hand Puppetry.” It’s sort of puppeteering, and also a form of mime. It was modernised and further developed by French actor, mime, and puppeteer, Yves Joly. It’s even been used by the Jim Henson Creature Workshop in various ways, but perhaps most famously as the Helping Hands from “Labyrinth.” As early as the 80′s, Jim Henson was interested in the potential of CGI. Augmenting this simple art form with CGI and what I would assume is mocap technology is something I think Henson would have been incredibly proud to see. It’s an example of one of many reasons “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” is such a success. It doesn’t seek to exploit nostalgia. There’s real love and respect for the artistry that came before it.
