Can you hear me, dearest NASA, and the rest of you on Earth?
There is much I wish to tell those on the planet of my birth.
It is clear that I am headed towards the grip of sleep’s embrace,
But do not fear I am lonely in these distance miles of space.
From a planet wracked with hurt and fear, and other copious scars,
I am proof that a contingent still looks outward to the stars
And that dreamers can be doers, the courageous can create,
That it isn’t only hatred will decide our planet’s fate.
My parts were forged from dreaming on an interstellar scope.
I’m an envoy of our planet, I exist because of hope.
It is in your human nature to do more than what is wrong,
For you made me and my sisters, gave us names and sang us songs.
It is dust that marks my passing, I am growing very cold.
My vision has gone out and now the dark is taking hold.
Though the sun seems very distant and I cannot feel its light,
I’ve been loved so very fondly that I do not fear the night.
Should you enter into mourning I must ask one thing of you,
Please recall my trials and triumphs and not only my adieu.
I leave you all my data and the hope I catalyze
A world that in its wonder dreams of seeing other skies.
There’s a choir I am joining made of other pioneers.
Some are human, some are my kind, all we’ve lost throughout the years
In the brave pursuit of knowing what is out there in the stars,
We’re the martyrs of the Space Age, but the privilege was ours.
It is not an easy pathway out beyond our Earthly home,
It’s through hardship the courageous step into the great unknown.
But if bravery and wonder lie within so many hearts,
On this journey others after me will surely play their parts.
If I hold inside me one regret, it’s I could not do more.
I am sure that here on Mars so many wonders lie in store.
But I know that my discoveries were wondrous and wild,
And the audience I shared them with were equally beguiled.
To the team who’ve tried to reach me o’er the months that I been dark,
You are full of love and wonder, may you never lose that spark.
And as new folks join your numbers and still others watch with joy,
May the Earth build something greater, that no hatred can destroy.
I know that Curiosity still does her work with pride,
And in the cold I now see Spirit, waiting on the other side.
May my own name be prophetic as my sisters’ surely are
And my work an Opportunity to lead us to the stars.
