Update: I still hate ‘Harry Potter should have been a teacher’ with a fiery passion. You try telling a dude who decided to face the Ultimate Douchelord pretty much on his own at ELEVEN that he’s gonna spend the rest of his working life sitting on his butt for eight hours a day, obey ridiculous policies that have more to do with people’s ego than what’s actually right for kids, and hear every random asshole under the goddamn sun tell him that ‘those who can’t do teach’, see if he takes it well.
Like holy shit, I understand why Auror is maybe not the best profession at face value (though I would argue it depends on how you think he’d deal with his trauma) but like, seriously. Do you see Harry ‘No need to call me sir, Professor Snape’ Potter even remotely try to be polite to the inevitable asshole parents?
Do you see Harry ‘I spent eleven fucking years in a closet’ Potter have to watch abused kids in his classroom and know that the best he can do is warn authorities (which btw: he has EVERY REASON not to trust) and hope they do their job properly?
Look, I’m a teacher and I love my job, I really do, but for the most part the impact I have on my students’ life is going to be either indirect or a long-term thing, and I can’t for the life of me imagine any version of Harry Potter being okay with that.
THANK YOU OH MY GOD. I AM A(N ASSISTANT) TEACHER TOO AND I TOTALLY AGREE. NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THIS BUT BECAUSE BEING AN AUROR IS SO… FREAKIN’… HARRY.
Look, Harry was a pretty good teacher and I’d love to see him come back to Hogwarts for the occasional masterclass, yeah?
But Harry has a Saving People Thing. That’s not something that was put on him by the Prophecy, that’s who the fuck he is. The kid who sees people in danger and no one doing shit about it and says “Fuck it, I’ll fix it myself.” And has been doing it since he was ELEVEN.
You know what Harry hates? People looking at him. You know what he’s never been great at? Public speaking. You know where he was never as comfortable as certain friends of his? Academic settings with tests and essays and paperwork.
The world post-Battle of Hogwarts is rebuilding. They’re hunting down Death Eaters and trying to keep people safe and while I agree that Harry deserves a break, okay, he deserves some time to relax and heal or whatever, you would have to drag him KICKING AND SCREAMING away from the fight.
So yeah. Auror Harry is my jam.
