My coworker told me not to use dating sites and to “just go out to the park and approach someone who looks attractive, say ‘hey, I’d like to get to know you better’, and take it from there!”

You find one online, or get referred by someone you know,
There is no third option
I don’t know any gay couples who met spontaneously as strangers in person. It’s almost always “we became internet pals and then fell in love”, “we met through someone else we used to date”, or “we were good platonic friends for years and then realized we were gay when we tearfully confessed our feelings at a party”.
