Humpback whales protect other animals
from killer whales, but nobody knows
why. Source Source 2 Source 3
This is a picture of a humpback that placed a seal onto its upturned belly in order to move it towards safety. When the seal started to slip off, the whale pushed it back on with its fin, then swam until the seal could get itself onto the ice.
Some researchers think the whales engage in this behavior because it’s how they protect their own calves, but they aren’t sure why they would continue the fight knowing it wasn’t another whale.
I love humpbacks so much already and knowing this just increases the love. Best cetacean
I know cetaceans are often regarded as some of the most intelligence sea creatures, but intelligent enough for altruistic behavior? I know elephants have shown that, but I didn’t think that had been spotted in whales. Awesome!
well, dolphins and orcas have been observed harming other animals in ways that do not make sense as predation, self-defense, or territorial behavior (in other words, most likely malicious behavior), so it makes sense that the opposite is possible.
Excellent point. If you’re smart/sapient enough to be a jerk, you’re smart/sapient enough to be a non-jerk, too.
SUCH GOOD WHALES
Swimming about and protecting other animals
They are UNDERSEA HEROES and I love them
