Don’t let Godfrey Gao’s death be just ‘he had a heart attack’. No. He died because of negligence. He collapsed after being forced to work inhumane hours under extreme conditions, and the people in charge didn’t care about his (or his costars’) safety enough to have a real fucking doctor on set, or even stopped the fucking filming to help him before it was too late. Get mad. Demand justice.

I am still so, so angry.

Godfrey Gao was filming the Zhejiang TV (浙江卫视) variety show “Chase Me” (追我吧), which is basically an “American Ninja Warrior” type of show, except the obstacle courses are much more extreme and the contestants are not trained athletes who have prior knowledge of the course set up / get to train on the course beforehand. Filming for the show began around 8 AM and when Godfrey Gao collapsed, it was around 1 or 2 AM. They had been filming for 17 hours straight, doing physically demanding activity in the cold in the dead of night. When he collapsed, the production crew thought it was a joke (or a bit/sketch for the show) and continued filming, until fellow contestant Johnny Huang yelled for help several times. Crew members (not paramedics) attempted to resuscitate him, and he was sent to the hospital at least 20 minutes afterwards. He passed away three hours later.

Celebrity contestants on the show have publicly mentioned how intense and physically demanding it is. William Chan, well known for his love for exercise, talked about how he loves working out, but “not this way” when commenting on the show. Elane Zhong talked about how she wanted to give up after doing two episodes because she felt like she was going to die. Several contestants, including Olympic boxer Zou Shiming, needed oxygen masks and vomited during filming. Aside from the obvious question of why this show was even allowed to be produced in the first place, for such a physically demanding and dangerous show, why were there no paramedics and/or an ambulance already on-site?

When someone initially posted on Weibo about Godfrey Gao collapsing and being sent to the hospital, #What happened to Godfrey Gao# became a trending topic on Weibo. But it was quickly pushed down off the charts as other random topics began trending (such as a young actress getting caught smoking, two celebrities reportedly dating, an actor doing sewing, etc.). It’s obvious that Zhejiang TV was trying to save its ass by covering the whole story up by buying trending topics.

As more people caught wind of the situation and began talking about it on Weibo, attention was directed toward the “Chase Me” Weibo and the Zhejiang TV Weibo, but no official statements were released. When the news of his death blew up on Weibo, #Chase Me# and #Zhejiang TV# were in the top ten trending topics, but they also quickly dropped lower on the trending charts (Zhejiang TV buying trending topics again).

The “Chase Me” Weibo released a statement basically saying that they had tried the best they could to save Godfrey Gao “immediately after he collapsed”, but they did not give an apology or take responsibility. The statement they released is the same exact statement the Zhejiang TV variety show “Splash!” (a celebrity diving competition) released after Ashton Chen’s assistant drowned in the pool during filming several years ago. (There have reportedly been many other incidents and injuries that celebrities have suffered during filming for variety shows and live shows for Zhejiang TV.) Filming has reportedly stopped for the show and this week’s episode won’t air, but it has not been confirmed if the show will completely shut down production.

Hours later, Zhejiang TV finally released their own statement, which was basically the same as the “Chase Me” statement and emphasized that they had tried to save him “immediately after he collapsed”. They said that they “would take responsibility”, but still refused to apologize. And for more proof of Zhejiang TV’s assholery, they chose the “screen comments” option on their Weibo post with their statement, so you can’t see any of the critical comments.

So fuck Zhejiang TV. Godfrey Gao was a young man who had a whole life to live. He was supposed to be one of the groomsmen for a friend’s wedding on November 29, in two days. He was a gentle being loved by his friends, family, co-stars, fans, and more. He was a beloved son and fiance. Fuck Zhejiang TV for taking him out of lives of people who cared for and loved him.

Fuck Zhejiang TV for killing Godfrey Gao.

2 things. I know we all know this but it bears repeating so we dont accidentally repeat their framing: Gates was, intentionally or not, speaking in hyperbole. Warren’s wealth tax would definitely not take 100 billion off of him. Second of all, regarding that comment above mine about the 3 cars: I googled most expensive cars and one is the Lamborghini Veneno, which costs $4.5 million dollars. One billion dollars divided by 4.5 million? 222. Bill Gated could have a fucking fleet of two hundred of the most expensive Lamborghini cars in the world and he would STILL HAVE 6 BILLION DOLLARS.

As long as EVERY SINGLE PERSON working directly or indirectly for a billionaire doens’t make a living wage, has paid for healthcare, can pay for their own and their children’s education and gets paid on sick days - that billionaire should just shut up and pair their taxes. I’m so sick and tired of all that whining, no one MAKES a billion dollar, people who you most likely exploited made it for you.

Marcus stopped abruptly in the middle of the grass. A woman in a blue dress was already sitting on the Crisis Bench. He didn’t recognize the dress. She looked up from where she was sitting.

“Sorry,” he said, holding up his hands. “I didn’t think anyone would be over here.” He didn’t think he remembered an introduction to anyone in that dress. It was a memorable sort of a dress. “I believe I ran into your mother inside?” he ventured, because he ran into so many mothers.

“She’s not here,” she said, which was not what he wanted to hear and which he absolutely could not handle at the moment.

“Right,” he said, trying to recover, pretending as if he’d just remembered something. “Your father–”

“We haven’t met,” she interrupted. “I’m not anyone.”

“Oh thank god,” he said, abandoning propriety to collapse onto the bench, dropping his head between his knees. “Thank you.”

“Too many people?” she said sympathetically.

“I’m really bad with faces,” he admitted.

“A lot of people are,” she assured him.

He dragged his hands down his face. “I just confused a Duke with a waiter.”

She bit her lip. “As long as you aren’t rude to waiters, you should be fine,” she said.

“I wasn’t rude,” he said. “I’m never rude. It would have been better if I was rude.” He buried his face in his hands. “I tipped him,” he said, anguished, muffled by his palms. Why had he been dressed like a waiter?

She burst out laughing, loud and with her head tipped back, overwhelming the empty garden. He separated his fingers to stare at her.

“Sorry,” she hiccuped, which immediately descended back into snorts. She laughed like she was hunting for truffles.

“Thanks,” he said, though he almost did feel better. “I’m feeling very supported in my time of need.”

“There’s only one thing you can do,” she said, wiping tears from her eyes, trying to dab at them to not destroy her makeup. Reflexively, he offered her a handkerchief, which she accepted. “You have to flee the country. It’s the only way.” She checked the handkerchief for signs of smeared eyeliner. “Leave your family. Change your name. Get a new family. Never tell them your dark secret.”

“I think my old family might notice if I got a new family,” he said, now resting his chin in his hands, elbows balanced on his knees.

“That’s why you have to burn your house down,” she said matter-of-factly, now holding his handkerchief in a neat fold in her lap. “Just burn the whole thing. Everything but your favorite hat. You leave the hat on top of the ashes for your family to find. ‘This must be him’ they’ll say. ‘He would never have left his favorite hat’. It’s the perfect crime. Once it’s done, you become a pig farmer. Anyone comes around asking questions, you feed them to the pigs.”

“You seem like you’ve put a lot of thought into this,” he observed. “How are your pigs?”

She looked him over sidelong. “Hungry,” she said primly.
