Didn’t even know people are not allowed to give blood if they are gay

That’s been the thing for years. The HIV scare of the ‘80s prohibited us from donating blood. And they still hold that against us despite the fact that that claim has been debunked over and over again.

the wording on the paperwork is “Are you a man who has had sexual intercourse with a man after 1980” or “Are you a woman who has had sexual intercourse with a man who has had sexual intercourse with another man since 1980” (this was a blood drive at my college where majority of the students werent Alive in 1980.) I donated all the time back when I was a virgin, because o- , but now I’m not allowed to. So a better question for this article is “Why won’t baby boomers let queer people donate blood, even though all the blood gets screened for HIV and aids anyway?” though, theres a lot of room for loopholes in the wording of it

This fucking matters. Bias in medicine is bias that should not exist. Fucking fix it.

I want people to know and understand why this was in the questionnaire too.

They did it because they didn’t want to test the blood for HIV/AIDS in the 1980′s. It was kinda pricey, took a few days, and they didn’t want to test it, so they screened for gay men as though that would prevent them from getting HIV+ Blood.

Naturally, people with HIV+ blood still donated (probably without being aware they were HIV+), because it’s not a ‘Gays only’ disease. Straight people got it without ever coming into contact with mlm because HIV/AIDS doesn’t really care that much about your orientation, as it turns out (contrary to the belief that led to this particular rule!).

THOUSANDS received blood  that had HIV+ blood. THOUSANDS died because the blood services decided it cost a little too much to check, and a few days was too long. They’re now legally required to screen all blood because of this, and the test now takes a few minutes (not days).

This part of the questionnaire was meant to ‘weed out’ people who maybe could have HIV/AIDS because they decided only MLM would have it, and only people who were in contact with MLM. For some reason, they continue to weed out MLM specifically from being allowed to donate due to the laziness (Not to mention capitalism) of the 80′s, despite the law having changed, the test being faster, and the test being exceedingly cheaper.

Their original intent never worked, and couldn’t work, and was pointless then as it is now. MLM should be allowed to donate blood, especially as it’s going to be tested anyways (And lbr here, two mlm who have had only each other as a sexual partner ever in their whole lives are probably not HIV+… yet they still cannot donate because of the AIDS crisis in the 80′s)

“Queer” is important to me because it covers the many facets of my identity and demands equal acknowledgement and respect for them.

I am a many headed beast, asexual, panromantic, genderfluid, and they’re all equally important to who I am. Having the word “queer” to describe myself gives me the ability to break down the walls between my identities.

I’m not just asexual, or panromantic, or nonbinary, I’m all of them, always.

No matter what, I’m queer.

Queer is a slur and the actual definition of queer is weird. If you watch old timey movies you will catch them saying “I have a queer feeling about this” or something along those lines because queer literally means weird, strange, peculiar, bizarre, outlandish, eccentric, unconventional, unorthodox, uncanny, odd, unexpected, unfamiliar, curious, unusual, abnormal, anomalous, atypical, untypical, and different.

I can’t even fathom why anyone would want to identify with a slur that is so rude to lgbt people. That word has done so much harm to people and the fact that ya’ll want to make it into an identity is outrageous. I get reclaiming slurs but to use a slur as a way to identify is just… wow.

Well, that’s the thing.

When people reclaim “queer,” it’s not, “this word is bad and means bad things and I’m gonna use it!”

It’s, “this word is good and means good things, and I’m gonna use it. I’m not accepting the idea that being different is bad, and that the particular ways that I’M different are bad. This term is a compliment. You’re confused, because you’re a bigot.”

It’s, “you think these are the worst, most disgusting and horrible things about me. But I know that these are my strengths. I know that the weird, bizarre, peculiar, abnormal, atypical, and different things about me are weird to you, and that you might hate them and hate me for them… and they’re also glorious, amazing, innovative, colorful, joyful, and inspiring.”

It’s, “I know that my community, and my culture, and my chosen family, and maybe even my life in general, are unconventional and unusual and unfamiliar to the rest of the world. And I also know that they’re powerful, wonderful, and life-saving. I know that if the world was willing to learn from us, it would be a less toxic, much better place.”

Kind of like if some asshole said, “That shirt is so gay,” and you said, “THANK you!”

Kind of like if my basically-a-Nazi hyper-conservative brother-in-law talked about “the queers” in front of me, and I decked him and doubled down on being myself. (just a little fantasy of mine lol)

“queer literally means weird, strange, peculiar, bizarre, outlandish, eccentric, unconventional, unorthodox, uncanny, odd, unexpected, unfamiliar, curious, unusual, abnormal, anomalous, atypical, untypical, and different.”

Why would it be bad to be any of these things?

Like, I mean, surely it’s not required to be unconventional! But that doesn’t make it WRONG or BAD.

Moreover, why would the people who are these things, and embrace them as good things to be, feel loved and accepted by the sort of person who says “your descriptor word is a horrible slur because it means [all these things that you are]”?

The reclamation of “queer” is based on acceptance of entire concepts related to “different,” “abnormal,” et cetera, and embracing them as good and wonderful things that enrich both those individuals and their surrounding community.

And that person up there arguing for its continued slur-ness sounds a whole lot like the sort of people who made it a slur the first time around, who treat our weirdness, strangeness, peculiarity, bizarreness, outlandishness, eccentricity, unconventionality, unorthodoxy, uncanniness, oddness, unexpectedness, unfamiliarity, curiosity, unusuality, abnormality, anomaly, atypicality, untypicality, and difference as bad things they mean us to be ashamed of.

I’m not surprised they don’t understand or accept our reclamation of it. They don’t understand or accept us, either. They’re pegging us as broken or deviant LBGTQs who just need to shut up and squeeze ourselves into the boxes provided, which are totally a reasonable number and variety of boxes provided because all the people complaining about “the q slur” have found their box.

And there’s an undercurrent of accusation that we’re really self-hating somehow, what with our self-harming use of “queer” to describe ourselves, and that … sounds familiar.

I suppose if it’s that hard to believe we love ourselves, in our weird, strange, peculiar, bizarre, outlandish, eccentric, unconventional, unorthodox, uncanny, odd, unexpected, unfamiliar, curious, unusual, abnormal, anomalous, atypical, untypical, and different glory, that’s the sort of conclusion logic produces?

But we do love ourselves. And “queer” is the word that means it. That’s how we took it back. That’s why it’s ours now.

Not gay as in happy, but queer as in fuck you.

I’m old enough to be half of y'all’s mom. Fuck you. I didn’t go to aids funerals and watch an entire generation of my forebears decimated as a child for you little shits to tell me how I and they or ANYONE ELSE is allowed to identify.

Fuck off with that TERF shit.

interesting that ellen page gets a bunch of hate for calling out the anti-gay rhetoric and practices of the hillsong church, but people rush to support chris pratt and his weak statement about how the church is “totally open to everyone” because they apparently helped him through his divorce

interesting that chris evans is about two seconds from punching donald trump on twitter everyday and gets praised for it, meanwhile brie larson is similarly political and speaks out about sexual assault and inclusion in hollywood – and gets branded as an “sjw” who’s going to “turn people away” from her upcoming movie

interesting

So I just had a thought

What if supernatural creatures don’t exist anymore? What if they did once, but through the years, they slowly mixed in with humans?

You can see the blood of fairies in the way a ballet dancer hovers in mid air before he or she hits the ground. You can see it in the way that middle school girl never forgets when someone makes her a promise. You can see it in how that one little boy in the kindergarten class seems more comfortable in the forest on that field trip than the others.

You can see the blood of dryads in hikers who never trip over roots. You can see it in that suburban grandmother never lets any of her garden die. You can see it in that one kid who climbs a tree faster than his friends, barely looking at the branches as he goes.

You can see the blood of naiads in the way a professional swimmer seems to command the water to help them. You can see it in how a cross country runner needs a water break more often than his teammates. You can see it in the way that one girl in your class always has a water bottle on her desk.

You can see the blood of mermaids in a surfer who can be tossed around underwater for a long time without drowning. You can see it in a teenage boy who doesn’t have to pretend to be unbothered by the pressure when he races his friends to the bottom of a swimming pool. You can see it in the little girl who wades into every stream she sees on a hike without quite knowing why.

You can see the blood of sirens in people who never have a problem with getting people to date them. You can see it in that soprano who can hit notes most of her fellows can only dream of. You can see it in the camp counselor who all the straight girls have a crush on, who can play guitar and sing better than any of the others.

You can see the blood of shapeshifters in the way an actor adjusts their personality to become their character with scary accuracy. You can see it in the subconscious, barely noticeable changes a tween girl’s eyes make to match her outfit better. You can see it in the way you always lose that one friend in a crowd if you’re not careful, because he’s just too good at blending in.

People who carry the blood of werewolves don’t change with the full moon anymore, but you can still see it in the way your best friend always knows something is wrong, though even they don’t know they’re smelling the changes in your body chemistry. You can see it in the way that one guy always seems to eat more than the reasonable amount of red meat at an all-you-can-eat buffet. You can see it in the way that one werido never has a problem when the teacher turns off the lights before a PowerPoint presentation because her eyes adjust quicker and better than yours.

The blood of supernatural creatures may have mostly faded away. But if you look closely, you can still see it.

I adore this!

My friend has a theory that unicorns still exist, but we poached them so much for their horns that, as we killed the unicorns with big horns, the only ones left the breed had small ones and over time they have lost them completely
