Carmen Machado wrote this amazing article about Donna Noble and how much The Thing That Happened To Her exemplifies the way culture hates women, and how it is one of the most traumatic things that’s ever happened on modern television.
I ugly-cried my way through reading this, because it still hurts so goddamn much.
Yes. This. Exactly.
Never over it. Never.
RTD managed to just not get it over and over. He robbed Rose of her agency not once but twice–and her second leaving story was worse than her first
He made Martha second best (what a lesson to an entire generation of brown kids. You’ll never be as good as the blond chav. Nice.) and utterly wasted Freema who was more interesting on Torchwood, which is just so wrong in every way.
But Donna was the worst. RTD was legit like a 14 year old fanboy labelling his darkfic “angst” and rolling around in the manufactured tragedy as if it’s the ball pit at a Chuckie Cheese.
I want very much to grab a stepladder and use it to reach his head for a hard slap.
I will never, ever, forgive the Who writers for what they did to Donna. Looking back, that’s when I stopped enjoying the show. When I stopped trusting it with my feelings.
