PPS, it is pretty much impossible to overstate how life-alteringly important this movie was to kids who didn’t conform to standard expectations of gender and sexuality, back in the day. Especially when back in the day was the mid-to-late 1980s, when the only queers you saw on TV were neutered AIDS tragedies, Bowie was playing straight, and even Elton John was married to a woman, and midnight showing of RHPS were pretty much the only place that felt like home. It was mental life raft for a lot of people.

Unrelated to this particular fandom, but every time I see these mesmerizing gifs, it reminds me that I am STILL WAITING for the Superman reboot where Clark Kent, fresh out of college, shows up to The Daily Planet and falls head over heels for Lois Lane, 23 years his senior, multiple Pulitzers already in hand because she’s had an entire career before he ever came along, steely-eyed and knowing every dirty little secret in Metropolis.

She has crow’s feet and laugh lines. She has streaks of gray in her hair because if she wanted to care more about her looks than her writing she’d be on television, but screw that. Two years into her first job, her editor banned her from a press conference for wearing flats instead of heels to work, and she still has a printout of that asshole’s face on her office dartboard. The mob families give her tips because they know she despises the cops almost as much as they do— she’s exposed three separate IA scandals since ’91. She learned how to type on a typewriter, but she scoffs at the hipsters who use them now that better options are available. She always cites her sources (except the anonymous ones, of course).

She’s shared a byline with a lot of men who have tried to take credit for her hard work, but Clark is the first one she’s ever met who downplays his own contributions, and sometimes insists on leaving his name off altogether. She used to think his wide eyed stare of admiration was a sarcastic affectation, but she’s starting to think he means it— she’s never known anyone so allergic to irony. He blushes when she leans in to squint at his computer screen (because she left her reading glasses in her other purse).

I have come to realize I identify as a demisexual. After trying to figure out a way to explain to my friends and family, I wanted a visual to help me explain it and what it means to me.
