You know what’s sad?
All it took was one good musical to get the youth interested in American history, and now people who didn’t even know who John Laurens was are obsessed with him. People who couldn’t even tell you what Hamilton’s greatest achievement are now able to quote him verbatim. It’s sad that all it takes is for someone to present this information in an interesting matter and suddenly the public loves it.
People nowadays act like kids aren’t interested in history, or politics, or anything academic. But we are, we’re just presented with it in such a boring, formulaic, bland manner that we hate it. The moment the medium changes and we are presented with an energizing musical with rap lyrics and wonderful characters, we love it.
That’s what the Arts are for, teaching and interesting. We shouldn’t be sitting there with textbooks and dates to memorize, that destroys history and what it means.
