most of us know how important representation is, but i feel like we don’t always realize how vital it is for white cishet people to see representation as well. like my white cishet 65 year old mom’s favorite show is brooklyn nine nine, and when she first began watching it she was so perplexed by ray holt. she had never really seen black gay characters in television before, and the very few times she has they were stereotypes, so she was just so interested by him bc “gay people can be like this?”

like obviously it would be great if she already knew lgbt+ people aren’t the tired stereotypes that society tries to portray us as, and it would be great if she was more educated that Yes black gay men exist and are common. but she didn’t know that, because she’s never really seen it. but just watching brooklyn nine nine has educated her so much!! she’s seeing a black gay man run a police squad, she’s seeing a large black man be one of the most gentle people ever, she’s seeing women of color empowering each other and totally kicking ass, she’s seeing a jewish man repeatedly talking about issues such as transphobia, homophobia, anti-semitism, racism, and she’s also seeing all these characters understand when it ISNT their place to talk about certain issues

so my mom sees stuff like this and thinks “oh i was so wrong about these groups” and then she recommends these types of shows to her other ignorant friends, and she also corrects people when they say bigoted things that enforce the toxic stereotypes she is now educated on. all from some proper representation on a half-hour tv show!! like representation doesn’t just help minorities, it helps the privelage people who have ingrained bigotry in them to see what minorities are really like and what they can be and it’s so important!! and then these privelage people can move forward and use their privelage to try and help minorities. representation of minorities helps the privileged too, and helps society to evolve!! so can bigots stop saying that it only benefits minorities. even if it did only help minorities that wouldn’t be a bad thing, but that isn’t the case so?? stop??

Yo. REMINDER TO PLEASE SWITCH OFF THE DAMNED “BEST STUFF FIRST” BOLLOCKS THAT TUMBLRS FORCING OUT. This blog posts once, maybe twice a day (not including asks, of which there haven’t been many lately) which means we fall low on Tumblr’s priority.

If you like this blog (and I’m assuming you do if you’re following it) then please turn off Best Stuff First so you can see stuff in chronological order. Please reblog stuff if you like it! But please, please, do not let this become a popular blogs only site. Do not let the small blogs be crushed down. Turn off “Best Stuff First”, reblog stuff you like or agree with, and show tumblr that no one in their right mind trusts their filtering system.

Edit: You can reblog this! You are actively encouraged to reblog this!

Reminder to the evening crowd! And also an add on for the evening crowd: if you like a post, consider reblogging it! For those people who haven’t switched off Best Stuff First - or can’t - reblogging it does help ensure that people who like this blog will get to see it on their dash!

another thing that massively pissed me off about Stranger Things S1 is the idea that a girl raised in borderline isolation who doesn’t know words like “friend” or “promise” and doesn’t realize she has a name would immediately try to be “pretty” and fixate on that… Duffer brothers delete your account

Second verse, same as the first: a girl raised in borderline isolation who doesn’t know what “girlfriend” or “dance” or “date” are sees The Boy She Likes talking to Another Girl precisely once and immediately fixates on this girl as a mortal enemy and a source of Core Rage… @ Duffer brothers talk to a woman someday

So I’m a phlebotomist.
And sometimes, I work at a site that is directly adjacent to an endocrinologist.
Which means I see and take blood from a lot of folks that are trans, or nonbinary, or gender nonconforming.

Do you have any fucking idea how easy it is, in customer-service speak, to respect someone’s gender?

I mean, I’ve had super awkward situations where I have to say things like ‘I’m sorry, that name isn’t coming up in our system. Is there another name…“
And without fail they provide their deadname and I plug it in and I say ‘Ok, that came up, do you want me to fix that in our system?” And they say ‘Yes’ and then I ADD IT AS A SYNOMYMOUS NAME. Same as I would for someone recently married or divorced. The end.

I have never experienced a situation in which I have felt motivated to ask someone’s pronouns.

I have had situations in which I have thought to myself ‘I have no idea if this person is ‘sir’ or 'ma'am’ and instead have gone 'Next patient please?’ or 'I can help who’s next’ or 'I can help you now’
while looking directly at them.

I have had situations where I’ve gone 'I’m like 90% certain that I’ve been given a record with this person’s deadname because this name does not match at all the gender presentation of the person I’m looking at’
And I say 'Ok, can you spell your last name for me? Ok, spell your first name? And your date of birth?’

and then I quietly write 'preferred name [the name they just spelled] on the top of thier record.

THIS IS NOT HARD.

And if this is not hard for me, as a person working in medicine who has to make certain that the person I’m talking to is the same person on the medical record that I’m looking up, how much easier must it be for, say, a barista who doesn’t give half a fuck who you are? I’ve BEEN a barista in the past.
If a Barista is asking your pronouns, that person is an asshole.

WATCH: Terry Crews Isn’t Afraid To Rock The Man-Purse

I fucking love Terry Crews.

He’s been so outspoken about toxic masculinity and it just gives me so much hope

Terry Crews is everything good and right with our world.

This was the moment I knew I would always love Terry Crews. Because he is shown a picture of himself with his clutch, and he says, “Women have the best ideas.” He does not go into a sloppy explanation about he’s “manly enough” to carry a purse. There’s no “I am a real man” horseshit dropped here. What he says is “Women have the best ideas.” And the rest of the story is basically, “I want to carry my own shit, and my wife always carries a purse with her own shit, so I got a purse for mine.”

Like, this is equality 101. You want to carry your own shit, grab a purse. There should be no judgement for carrying your own shit.

Terry Crews does not need our protection, but we must protect Terry Crews at all costs.

yall: this celebrity did a bad thing

me: it be like that sometimes

ok this post canceled due to recent events…I was talkin about some 26 year old pop star calling things “gay” in 2007 not a 50 year old hollywood producer who’s been actively pursuing 14 year old girls since 1976

a very important distinction. it’s one thing to fuck up, as all of us are apt to do, and it’s another thing entirely to be an abusive piece of shit with a history of sexual harassment.
