it’s important to recognize how “casual” white supremacy played as a joke plays a definitive role in the radicalization of these white men who go on to murder innocent people. it’s never just a joke because even if it’s somehow “just a joke” to the person saying it, there will always be someone who does not take it as a joke but rather takes it as validation of their hateful views.
white supremacy and all talk of genocide can never be a joke in that manner.
pewdiepie had a hand in this tragedy. there is blood on him, his channel, and, if it truly was just a joke, on his conscience for the rest of his life.
Please know I won’t even vaguely debate with his fans having meltdowns in the notes of this post because this isn’t up for debate.
When you treat bigotry like a joke, bigots will laugh. When you have bigots a space to laugh and for a community, you give them a space to normalize and then radicalize their beliefs.
It’s that simple.
All I’m saying is that Pewdiepie and his fans need to take a huge step to actively criticize White Supremacy (and not just “distance” themselves from it by saying “I’m not a nazi but here’s more nazi jokes”) and reconsider everything they’ve done so far. I’m not saying he should go to jail, just that this should weigh heavily on him.
Because if he truly never meant any of it, he’d be disgusted at what has happened and do everything he could to prevent something like this from happening again. He should want none of his fans to internalize bigotry on his behalf.
And not just have this weigh heavily on him; he needs to address it directly to his fanbase and the world. He needs to take down any and every video with his white supremacists “jokes” in it. Send proper condolences to the family of the victims, donate to them too.
His friends need to address it, too. Everybody in the YouTube community who defended this man knowing full well what he was doing and what audience he was cultivating needs to be aware and talk about it properly. No pussyfooting and no bullshit. Everybody was complacent with his platform so they should be sorry too.
Just so you know this post also serves as a comprehensive block list so any bastard you see defending him? Hit em with a block we’re not defending white supremacists today or ever again. Pewdipie fans choke.
