Becoming Anne Frank:

copperbadge:

The Smithsonian Magazine has a spectacular article this month about the ways in which we idolize and idealize Anne Frank and still at the same time manage to silence both her and other Jewish voices on the subject of genocide.

One of the most striking facts I took away from the article, which I have never encountered before, is that Anne Frank actually heard about people being asked to preserve their accounts of the war, and started revising her diary to make it a more pointed, readable account for public consumption. I’d heard about parts of it being censored by others (references to Jewish holidays, references to her sexual curiosity) but never that she had deliberately worked to create what we read as a conscious effort at chronicling her life for publication.

I had three separate classes where we studied her diary over the course of my education and any lesson that ignores that she was deliberately working to speak to the public ignores a huge aspect of her literary voice, and I’m mad about it. I love that she was rewriting her diary for public consumption and I think it adds a depth and meaning to the book that I’m angry I never got to explore in classes where I studied it.
