wilwheaton:

I just want to belabor this point for a moment.

These images are not explicit. These pictures show two adults, engaging in consensual kissing. That’s it. It isn’t violent, it isn’t pornographic. It’s literally just two adult humans sharing a kiss.

It’s ludicrous and insulting that – especially in 2018 – this is flagged, either by some sort of badly-designed algorithm, or by shitty homophobic people.

And to just restate something that I reblogged a little bit ago:

the reality is that for a lot of the LGTBQ+ community, particularly younger members still discovering themselves and members in extremely homophobic environments where most media sites were banned (but Tumblr wasn’t even considered important enough to be), this was a bastion of information and self-expression.

I am so lucky. I am so massively lucky and privileged. I’m rich, I’m white, I’m a CIS male in a heterosexual relationship. I can look just about anywhere in the world and see myself represented in art and media. My experience has been normalized to the exclusion and oppression of people who don’t share that experience.

That. Must. Change.

I can only imagine what it must feel like to fight every second of ever day just to exist in a world that is filled with people who share my demographic (but not my values) using their wealth and power and privilege to attack you, simply for being who you are, for existing. I can only imagine how terrible and suffocating and exhausting that must be.

According to marginalized and vulnerable people, this change in policy will directly hurt them, and that’s indefensible.

The ridiculousness of this policy change can be simply illustrated by the image here being flagged. Why was it flagged? Because homophobia is rampant and too many people who should stand up against it are cowards who don’t want to risk their own wealth and privilege in the service of people who can’t defend themselves.

I applaud and admire and respect the hell out of everyone in the LGBTQ community here who have formed networks and friendships and relationships and support structures for each other. You have worked so hard to create and maintain a safe space for each other, and I’m embarrassed, appalled, and furious that people who look like me are making your lives – hell, your very existence – so hard.

I’m just one person, and maybe it won’t matter or make a difference, but I stand with you, not just on this website, but in our entire universe. I see you. I love you. I value you.

Tumblr is apparently doing some crazy nonsense again, so it seems like a good time to remind everyone that Pillowfort.io is a new social media platform that aims to give users control of their content and how it’s seen and shared, as well as provide better communication tools to promote conversation and creativity. If this sounds good to you, you can donate $5 to our PayPal and you will receive a registration link the Friday after your donation. And if you decide the site isn’t for you, you can request a refund for up to three weeks after you sign up. (All money we receive through this process is going towards paying our hosting expenses and compensating our programmers.)

Reblogging this in light of the recent news, since we’ve been getting a lot of questions from people looking to join. If you’ve sent us a payment since the 16th of November you will receive your invitation email shortly after the site returns, which will likely be tomorrow! If you want to purchase more than one registration link ($5 per link, so $15 for example would get you 3 registration links) you can give them to anyone you want– the ones you purchase are not tied to your account in any way.

Now, Pillowfort will not always require a payment to sign up; we are doing this because we are still in the process of implementing our subscription plan, which will be our source of long-term revenue, and these payments through PayPal give us funding to make sure we can pay all our server expenses, employee compensation, etc. while we are still working on implementing our business plan. Once we exit beta you will be able to join the site and use all of its essential features for free, with the option to pay for some extra goodies similar to what LiveJournal and DreamWidth offer in their subscription plans.

Pillowfort feels to me a little like Tumblr and Facebook had a baby that was the best part of both of them – it takes a little figuring out to navigate but once you do it’s pretty easy to use. It’s an essentially Tumblr interface, just with added bells and whistles in some places.

There are some downsides – it doesn’t currently have an app, though it’s relatively mobile-friendly. It’s not as flexible in terms of how you can design a post and what you can upload as Tumblr is, but that’ll change with time and with more users. Basically it’s like…training-wheels tumblr. It’s a pretty good site and I think it will only get better.

It does have threaded comments, which is awesome for people who miss those from the LJ days, but there are some downsides to that too. So far, what I’ve seen is that way more people choose to make a comment and not reblog. This has two problems:

1. If you’re commenting rather than reblogging then the post isn’t going to gain traction in the same way it otherwise might and fewer people will see it. Posts don’t circulate nearly as widely, at least in my experience, so if you’re not going to one specific person’s blog you may never see what they’re posting, even if it’s shit you want to see. There are advantages to the ability of a post to go viral. Mind you, this may be the product of a lot of early PF adopters being huge fans of threaded comments from the LJ days and so more inclined not to reblog, and with a younger/more tumblr-trained crowd incoming that could change. But there is a strong social pressure, if you CAN comment and get a response you’ll actually see, to comment rather than reblog and “spam” other peoples’ dashes.

2. With threaded comments, a lot of the discussion gets siloed off into little threads in the post, rather than being visible to everyone. That CAN be a good thing, but traditionally it has also made dogpiling much easier, because you don’t have to be an asshole to someone on your OWN blog – you can be an asshole in comments where only other people, also coming to the thread to be assholes, can see you. There’s a reason fandom_wank wasn’t a thing anymore once fandom mostly moved to tumblr – it’s because there’s no cohesive way to document a wank on tumblr, whereas with threaded comments it’s alllllll laid out.

Honestly though I think it’s our best alternative. But partly I’m just praying fandom doesn’t move to Discord. :D

Yes, we allow NSFW content, we just asked that it be tagged with a ‘NSFW’ flag (available when you’re creating your post) so that it can be filtered out for the convenience of other users who wish to screen out such content.

Toys R Us To Return As Geoffrey’s Toy Box - Tokunation:
mrevergood:

super256colors:

max-out-of-ten:

tokupedia:

This whole bankruptcy thing was a money making scam by the suits who bought out the company back in the 2000s and ran it into the ground.

Not only is the toy store brand not dead, but 30,000 people are now angry as this scheme blocked them out of severance pay and they are now unemployed and unable to return to work when they start up again.

Many toy companies including Hasbro are raising eyebrows at this, as the initial bankruptcy cost them millions of dollars in sales revenue and their stocks took a nasty hit (Mattel being the worst off from it, as Toys R Us closing compounded with steadily falling sales of their products). Advocates are calling this a “bad PR stunt” since the suits want the company to make sales for the holidays.

Hopefully, this will cause enough of a stink to kill it off for good. I’d rather say goodbye Geoffrey as I knew him than have him come back as a reanimated corpse controlled by greedy hucksters who put thousands of people out of work for no other reason than to line thier own pockets and escape the consequences of their own failings.

@nuber1gamer

This one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen done by any company in years

Seriously. Share this. Impact sales. I wanna see Toy’s R Us driven in the ground for this shit-fucking hard. No mercy, just good old fashioned, cutthroat capitalism where the market says “FUCK YOU” in bright neon letters…just like the greedy fucks who orchestrated this whole thing like-except they won’t like it when the “FUCK YOU” sign is for them.

Guide to Figuring out the Age of an Undated World Map.

No but take the time to actually read it because I lost like 15 minutes.

I have a friend who is really good at this type of thing.  He once found an old globe at a garage sale and he was able to pin the date of it’s making down to like a 6 month window, because it only would’ve been correct during a specific point in WWII.

I was mad impressed, because I have no mind for geography.  I can barely remember my own state’s capitol.

THIS IS GOLD 😂😂😂

This is amazing. Take the time to actually read it.

Holy shit the super specific things towards the end

Oh wow!

I didn’t know anything about the giant lake in California being created by accident?!

Sometimes people hit a place in their life where things are going really well. They like their job and are able to be productive at it; they have energy after work to pursue the relationships and activities they enjoy; they’re taking good care of themselves and rarely get sick or have flareups of their chronic health problems; stuff is basically working out. Then a small thing about their routine changes and suddenly they’re barely keeping their head above water.

(This happens to me all the time; it’s approximately my dominant experience of working full-time.)

I think one thing that’s going on here is that there are a bunch of small parts of our daily routine which are doing really important work for our wellbeing. Our commute involves a ten-minute walk along the waterfront and the walking and fresh air are great for our wellbeing (or, alternately, our commute involves no walking and this makes it way more frictionless because walking sucks for us). Our water heater is really good and so we can take half-hour hot showers, which are a critical part of our decompression/recovery time. We sit with our back to the wall so we don’t have to worry about looking productive at work as long as the work all gets done. The store down the street is open really late so late runs for groceries are possible. Our roommate is a chef and so the kitchen is always clean and well-stocked.

It’s useful to think of these things as load-bearing. They’re not just nice - they’re part of your mental architecture, they’re part of what you’re using to thrive. And when they change, life can abruptly get much harder or sometimes just collapse on you entirely. And this is usually unexpected, because it’s hard to notice which parts of your environment and routine are load bearing. I often only notice in hindsight. “Oh,” I say to myself after months of fatigue, “having my own private space was load-bearing.” “Oh,” after a scary drop in weight, “being able to keep nutrition shakes next to my bed and drink them in bed was load-bearing.” “Oh,” after a sudden struggle to maintain my work productivity, “a quiet corner with my back to the wall was load-bearing.”

When you know what’s important to you, you can fight for it, or at least be equipped to notice right away if it goes and some of your ability to thrive goes with it. When you don’t, or when you’re thinking of all these things as ‘nice things about my life’ rather than ‘load-bearing bits of my flourishing as a person’, you’re not likely to notice the strain created when they vanish until you’re really, really hurting.

Almost two weeks after reading this, and I’m still kind of blown away at what a ridiculously fruitful definition this is.  Like I had no idea that load bearing things were a thing that needed to have a word for them, but now I’m like holy shit I’m so glad that there’s now a word I can use to refer to this really important class of Thing.

This is astounding. Load-bearing. Forget spoons, this concept is wonderful. I’m going to update my Spear Theory with this.

agendervenom:

There’s been a few people here and there in the tags trying to start ship discourse but…

Yall seem to forget that eddie/venom are canon in the comics… this is pretty much basic level Venom lore

Venom declares their love for Eddie:

Eddie talks to someone about being in a relationship with Venom and how much he loves it:

They consider each other married:

They’ve considered each other marred since the 1990 comics:

Yet another discussion on their romantic relationship:

Eddie considers Venom his long time romantic partner:

They go on movie dates with each other and hold hands!!!:

…This scene:

Um…. anyways, heart chocolates:

They call each other pet names CONSTANTLY:

The ending to one of the comics has a heart symbol and the classic ‘fairy tale’ ending:

Speaking of the heart ending, they consider their entire story in the comics to be a love story

I just… do I need to explain further?

They’ve also canonically given birth to a symbiote child before and raised it together until it went off on its own. Yep. They had a child together.

Anyways…. symbrock is canon. And it has been since 1990 when they first considered themselves married and in a relationship.

Recently, Tumblr was removed from the Apple app store due to an incident involving child pornography. This incident is incredibly unfortunate, but it doesn’t stand alone. Tumblr was also removed from the app store due to the large influx of porn bots and pornographic spam, users claiming to be proud to be pedophiles, blatant Nazism, racists who are not deleted for sending hate and harassing users, and more. I myself reported someone for harassing me, but because I had blocked the person and couldn’t access the messages where they harassed me, they were still able to send me anonymous asks. Your support staff, with back doors to the website (presumably), claimed they could not access the messages, and I was left SOL. Many features on this website do nothing to actually protect your users from harassment, racism, homophobia, transphobia, Nazis, pedophiles, predators, porn bots, and more.

You claim in your statement to us that you “have been working on these problems for a long time”. This is blatantly untrue. Please do not lie to us and patronize us. We’ve been here. We’ve seen you do nothing over, and over, and over again.

We complained to you for months and months about the rampant porn bots, and you did nothing except add a report button on mobile which only reported sensitive content or spam at best. You could have addressed this problem with an effective algorithm, but you did not. We complained to you about being harassed and sent hate speech for being LGBT+, and you did nothing. We complained to you about blogs being randomly deleted, and sometimes you’ve restored them, other times you have not. We complained to you that there were people proudly claiming to be “Minor Attracted Persons”, or pedophiles, and you did nothing. We complained to you about people proudly claiming to be white supremacists, and you did nothing. All of these things are “against the community guidelines”, and yet over and over, you have not found effective ways to handle these problems or suppress the feeling of welcome that these users claim to get here. You have had a long time to work on these problems, but you haven’t addressed them. To say you have is untrue.

Multiple other social networking websites, such as Wordpress, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and others have effectively dealt with rampant pornography, racism, pedophilia, and other problems without causing massive issues for their users who are not misusing the platform. They are continuing to find new, effective ways to deal with these issues without causing problems for their userbase as a whole.  There is no reason that you are unable to do this effectively other than that you wanted to do it quickly. You have once again chosen your stock holders over your users. And we have had enough.

You have already started to ban “Adult” content with a new algorithm. Here are screenshots of just a fraction of the posts you have flagged as containing adult content:

Your new system of simply tackling everything at once is not working. At all. And each of these screenshots is proof of your utter incompetence. None of these posts contain pornographic acts, “female nipples”, or any community violation of any kind.

We, the users, have been asking you for months to deal with these problems - particularly, the porn bots and bots that spam. In order to block a bot from a side blog, I have to do it manually, even though they are in my side blog’s feed. This is a huge issue for mobile - only users. They keep cropping up in droves, taking over our posts and tricking google into making it look like a legitimate blog linked to a pornographic website. We have complained to you for months and months now, and your solution to simply “ban all adult content” is ineffective. I agree that children should not be able to access pornography - but this is not how you tackle a porn bot problem. Your system is utterly useless, allows for racists, pedophiles, porn bots, and Nazis to remain untouched. It also harms sex workers and real people who may use this website for some forms of adult content responsibly. Moreover, as seen above, it harms plenty of users who have in no way violated your terms of service.

If you keep this up, you threaten your website and company as a whole. Many of us are backing up our blogs and planning places to go to.

You already have a content filter for “sensitive” content (content inappropriate for younger viewers). You could have improved this, instead of attacking your entire user base. It seems to be a very lazy “solution”, if you could call it one at all, and one that harms your entire userbase.

If you are going to keep this filter in place and make Tumblr, a website that has never been known for being family friendly and has never claimed to be, you are going to lose millions of your users. We are already planning our exodus. It isn’t hard to follow. Censor us, and we will go somewhere else. That is not a threat. It is a promise.

Sincerely,

The users of your website.
