Look at the incredible, heartbreaking emotion on simba’s face when he’s running from the wildebeests in the lion king remake. Truly an extraordinary achievement thanks to the magic of modern, state-of-the-art CG.
Scar: RUN!!! AND NEVER COME BACK!

Woah. It’s almost like animals don’t have the same facial capabilities like humans do. Crazy shit you guys. The lions actually look like lions. Insane.
Yeah but its shitty
That’s why doing a “live action” remake was absolutely idiotic. Humans can’t perceive animal facial features like they can other humans. And exaggeration in hyper realism just looks bad.
Yeah it’s almost like real animals’ inability to have the same range of facial expressions humans can read is why hyperrealistic CGI Lion King was a bad idea.
Can’t wait for the “live-action” remake of Finding Nemo so we can watch a bunch of dead-eyed fish for an hour and a half.
Because Realistic CGI is TOTES the sign of a quality movie, guys~!
It being CGI isn’t even an excuse I mean look at the past couple movies that have came out over the years.
And the new Pokemon movie-
Realism isn’t the problem. Disney trying to crank out as many unnecessary remakes as fast as possible for a quick buck is the issue.
Also, to everyone saying the reason it looks bad is because it’s photorealistic and we can’t read animal expressions, or that animals don’t have facial expressions humans can read
Fuck you???
Animals might not have the same facial expressions as humans (smiling is the first thing that comes to mind) but that doesn’t mean we’re incapable of understanding them or their body language
Yes the original has a very human expression, and he has eyebrows. But ignore that right now. You know what else informs me that Simba is scared? That pose and the way his ears drop.
Because cats ball up and press their ears to the back of their head when they’re scared.
This has none of that.
Here’s my cat after a bath. He’s pissed and does not like being held up like that.
Know how I know that? Because his tail is up between his legs and again, his fucking ears are laying flat. Now, they aren’t pressed against the back of his head, so this is more in the annoyed spectrum than it would be fear.
Here he is again, having a good time in a box. His ears are up and alert and his pupils are wide, so that means he’s excited as opposed to relaxed.
Here he is again, confused by the sound of a microwave. His ears are alert, like pretty much every single cat does. And he’s sitting upright, which is really only something he does. But he only does that when he’s feeling “What the fuck is that shit?”
Here he is, much younger, and relaxed as fuck
Not only is he passed out, but he feels incredibly safe in this moment. Because cats do not expose their bellies unless they feel safe.
Humans have spent a long time besides animals, and cats in particular. And domesticated cat body language isn’t that different from wild cat body language.
More to the point, the animators working on the original Lion King did fucking research on the animals they had to animate. They went to zoos, and wildlife preserves.
They brought a Whole Ass lion into the studio once, just so they could draw it and get a sense for how they moved.
These are not too realistic for our puny human brains to read to proper emotion into.
These are just poorly animated.
^^^ Even if it’s live action (which it’s not it’s hyper realistic animation) animals emote. It’s not the same as a person but they emote. Ears back, tail between legs, sitting low, backing up. All of that would create more feeling than what’s here.
