as a general rule. if what we’re calling ‘cultural appropriation’ sounds like nazi ideology (i.e. ‘white people should only do white people things and black people should only do black people things’) with progressive language, we are performing a very very poor application of what ‘cultural appropriation’ means. this is troublingly popular in the blogosphere right now and i think we all need to be more critical of what it is we may be saying or implying, even unintentionally.

There is nothing wrong with everyone enjoying each other’s cultures so long as those cultures have been shared.

Eating Chinese food, watching Bollywood movies, going to see Cambodian dancers, or learning to speak Korean so you can watch every K drama in existence is totally fine. The invitation to participate in those things came from within those cultures. The Mexican family that owns the place where I get fajitas wants me to eat fajitas. Their whole business model kind of depends on it, actually.

If you see something from another culture you think you might want to participate in, but you don’t know if that would be disrespectful or appropriative, you can just…ask. Like. A Jewish friend explained what a mezuzah was to me, recently. (It’s the little scroll-thing near their front doors that they touch when they come into their house. It basically means “this is a Jewish household.”)

“Oh, cool,” I said. “Can I touch it? Or is it only for Jewish people?”

“You can touch it or you can not touch it,” she said. “I don’t care.”

“Cool, I’m gonna touch it, then.”

“Cool.”

It’s not hard.

You want to twerk, twerk. I’ve never heard a black person say they didn’t think anybody else should be allowed to twerk. Just that they want us to acknowledge that they invented that shit, not Miley fucking Cyrus.

this is a good post.

Thank you, I was trying to sort this out in my head but you explained it very well.

#free exchange of culture is great - taking that culture without invite and pretending yours is an original take#(worse still profiting off it)#is cultural appropriation (by @gnimaerd)

Today in “Tumblr Gets It Right”

The phrase I learned in college for this is cultural exchange, and it is very important to the entire history of the human race. While there are instances where it is appropriate to use the phrase “cultural appropriation” (like what the tags above outline), it makes me really upset to see people on this site assume that all instances of cultural exchange count as appropriation and are not okay.

Blogging this tweet because this explains SO MUCH about the mindset of pretty much all the folks I’ve known who’re against single-payer, it’s not even funny…

This….

This never occurred to me. Not once. That Americans are against Health Care because they think it actually costs tens of thousands of dollars for a broken arm, hundreds of thousands for a complicated birth, millions for cancer treatment.

Because they’ve never known anything different. The idea that a broken arm is only a couple hundred bucks; a complicated birth a couple thousand; cancer treatment only tens of thousands; all easily covered by existing tax structures.

This explains a lot.  And it’s a good example of what I was talking about in my post on scarcity being used to prop up ableism – always question the idea that a resource is genuinely scarce.  Even if it seems obvious that it is, quite often that’s the result of careful manipulation and misconceptions that you’re not even aware of.

And never think you’re too smart to be fooled by that kind of thing, it doesn’t work like that.  Similarly, don’t think people who are fooled by something are stupid.  Nobody can have all the information about everything, and nobody has the time and energy to investigate and put together conscious conclusions about every piece of information they’re given.  It doesn’t take being stupid, or even just gullible, to believe something like this.

I currently live in a country without free medical care and still, it’s enormously cheap compared to the USA. An American expat wrote a piece for our English language paper about how she paid more for parking at the hospital than giving birth to her baby that’s pretty interesting:

in the last ten years we’ve had more movies starring guys named chris playing guys named steve than we’ve had female-lead superhero movies

Yes. Yes we would. Gawker, Why the fuck are you trying to turn this into a gendered issues?

Who? Who do you think wouldn’t be disgusted if a guy did that? Where are you getting that this is a gendered issue or even a regular issue?

It’s gross. I’m not saying that out of sexism or hate. Vaginal yogurt is disgusting.

Uh…yes? Yes we would? Or are you suggesting we’d happy slurp up some of that fresh Dick Cheese Yoghurt?

man, no matter how good or bad the movie ends up being, the editor of this trailer deserves an award

I’ve seen it twice now in theaters, and the rhythmic and narrative coherence of the whole thing PUMPS ME UP

(especially in contrast to the fucking mess of the Transformers trailer that inevitably followed both times, and consisted solely of loud french horn honks and crashes interspersed occasionally with meaningless overwrought dialogue delivered with zero conviction)

in any case, I’m going to now forever associate that Kanye song with Charlize Theron pummeling a man with a freezer door, and I have no complaints about that

the song is a mashup of personal Jesus by depeche mode and black skinhead by kanye, its on soundcloud by fa$ion $en$e and its called personal yeezus

its so fuckin good y’all

wow first of all I was not expecting this post to blow up, I’m glad other people appreciate good trailer editing

and secondly THANK YOU FOR THE INFO ON THE MASHUP, YESSSS, I’ve had it stuck in my head all week and it is gr9

LOOK MORE INFORMATION & also just the trailer again because nnnnnnnhhh.
