On the night of January 22, 29-year old Janese Talton-Jackson was shot to death on a sidewalk by a man who was angry because she refused to give him her phone number upon request. Her story is sadly reminiscent of Mary Spears’, who was killed in similar circumstances in 2014. Every few months stories like these make it into the news cycle, even though related harassment and assaults are happening every day in the US and elsewhere.  When stories do surface, people express surprise, sadness and outrage, all of which seem to dissipates in a heartbeat. If there is more prolonged criticism, it often falls along racist, ethnic, nationalist, classist lines, despite the far greater prevalence of attacks on women by men in their own peer groups

Women can and do say no, sometimes successfully and in ways that are empowering. When we do, people applaud us, cheer us on, make videos that go viral. But, every single time we do so at great risk.

No, taking naked pictures doesn’t mean I consent to sharing them.

No, I don’t want to perform oral sex on a stranger.

No, I don’t want to be married to you anymore.

No, what I wear doesn’t give you rights to sex.

No, I don’t want to send you naked pictures.

No, I don’t want to see your naked picture.

No, I don’t want to see you anymore.

No, I don’t want to get back together.

No, drinking doesn’t mean I consent.

No, I won’t go to the prom with you.

No, you cannot share that picture.

No, I don’t want you to touch me.

No, I don’t want to live with you.

No, I don’t want to have a drink.

No, you’re abusing your power.

No, I don’t want to talk to you.

No, I want to keep this baby.

No, I don’t want to date you.

No, I want to go to school.

No, I don’t want to smile.

No, I disagree with you.

No, I want an abortion.

No, I don’t need a ride.

No, I want a divorce.

No, I don’t think so.

No, I will not fight.

No, I will not stop.

No, I’m not going.

No, I won’t.

No, stop.

Street harassment doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Women everywhere, whether consciously or not, have to be vigilant about a broad spectrum of violence: street harassment, sexual assault, stalking, and both stranger and intimate partner assault.  One in three American woman has experienced domestic violence. One in six is stalked.  An American woman’s chance of being sexually assaulted is one in five, one in three if she is Native American.

Women. Can’t. Say. No. “Just tell him to you aren’t interested?” is a sorry and entitled display of really not caring what happens to the person you are talking to. The list above is long, but edited down. How many women have to die because they say “no” before this is taken seriously as a matter of public health and women’s rights?

I’m saddened by Janese Talton-Jackson’s brutal killing. But I am enraged that attacks like this happen all the time and we continue to ignore the connective tissue. Last month, a man, angry that a woman had rebuffed him earlier in the night, knocked down the front door of her apartment and, when he found she wasn’t home, grabbed her three month old puppy and threw it out of a third floor window. Last week, a man was sentenced to two years in jail for attacking his spouse with a hammer. Another was arrested for attacking his girlfriend as she tried to attempt leaving him. And yet a third was arrested after killing his wife for wanting divorce. This week, police in Florida are trying to locate a man who has been serially harassing women real estate agents while they work.

In some countries, the most violent attacks against girls and women involve acid throwing, in others, like ours, its more likely to involve setting a woman on fire, ashappened in Pomona, California on Christmas Day. If it had happened in, say, India, chances are you would have heard about it. That might sound like an outlier, until you begin to look and see similar cases in Maryland,  Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri,Oregon. Clearly all these women weren’t subservient enough and just as clearly, no mainstream media outlet is keeping track.

Damon Young writes about this from his perspective as a man and a father, here.

male entitlement leads to violence. this is scary and sad, and happens every day.

This happened in my city in a neighborhood not to far from mine. The entitlement to women that men can have to women and girls here can be terrifying.

These delicate white flowers are certainly beautiful, but what makes them awesome is the fact that they aren’t actually flowers at all. They’re exquisite works of sculpture painstakingly hand-carved from deer bones and antlers by Japanese artist Masaya Hashimoto.

“villain attempts to go back in time to kill superman as a small child, gets shot in the face by ma kent, who buries him behind the barn with the others” would probably have niche appeal as a comic but i don’t care, i want it

The first time a man from the future showed up at Martha Kent’s house, Clark Kent was two years old.

According to his birth certificate, anyway. She just kind of accepted that the details were a little fudged. Relativity, and all.

Maybe the stranger would have succeeded in whatever it was he wanted to do, except that he really did just show up. Appeared, like a ghost made flesh, right in the backyard. Clark, thank goodness, was out in the fields with Jonathan. He couldn’t bear to be alone, that boy, and they could never bear to leave him.

Which left Martha free to shoot the ghostly intruder in the face.

Martha had not always considered herself a shoot first, ask questions later sort of a person. But that was before she found a baby in a spaceship where her corn was supposed to be.

They’d switch off, Jonathan and her, who got Clark and who got the shotgun. Martha got the shotgun more often than not. Guns made her husband uncomfortable. She was hardly a fan, but she’d always been a terrible pacifist. Too determined to defend herself.

The sight of all that blood and brain and bone was still nauseating. She compartmentalized, told herself it was no different from slaughtering a cow; didn’t think about riot gear or tear gas or the friends she’d lost or all the things she’d moved away from when her heart couldn’t take it any longer. This was different. This was her son.

She prodded the corpse with her foot. It remained a corpse. A real nasty looking corpse, all big and burly and holding a gun much too large. She didn’t like making assumptions based on appearances, but she didn’t imagine he’d been coming for anything nice. She bent down to search his pockets, found a metal wallet and flipped it open.

Born 2018.

Well, hell. Wasn’t that just a kick in the pants?

Probably she ought to have been a bit more unsettled than she was. But she’d been waiting two years for someone to show up on her doorstep, men in black or UFOs or something. Hell, she’d half expected her sweet little boy to hatch into something worse.

Just because she brought home space babies didn’t mean she was a damn fool.

Jonathan had rejoined her in long strides, was holding Clark in such a way that he couldn’t see the corpse on the ground. “Well, shit,” he said.

“Eyup,” Martha agreed.

“Don’t look government.”

“Nope.”

“We burying him?”

“I’ll bury him,” Martha said, standing up. “You get Clark inside and read him a book or something. I don’t want him seeing any of this, getting him messed up in the head.”

“You sure? Looks heavy.”

“That’s why we have a wheelbarrow. I’ll stick him out behind the barn, might as well keep all our secrets in one place.”

Martha had a long time to think as she dug a time traveler’s grave. There were a lot of reasons someone might travel back in time trying to kill her kid. The first was her instinct as a mother, which was: he was a fucking asshole. Who killed a kid? Fucking assholes, that was who.

Now, it was also possible that her sweet little boy grew up to be some kind of space Hitler. She didn’t think she’d raise that kind of a kid, but she didn’t suppose there was any parent who set out to raise a Hitler.

Still didn’t sit right with her. She didn’t much like the idea of killing baby Hitler, either.

Okay folks. May 4th and Wear Glitter For Carrie Fisher is coming up. Whatever you do DO NOT PUT CRAFT GLITTER ON YOUR FACE/NEAR YOUR EYES. It’s cheap, yes, but craft glitter can scratch your corneas. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye from infection.

Use cosmetic glitter instead. It’s smaller and is made round instead of hexagonal, giving it a smaller chance of scratching your eyes if it gets in. Here’s a tutorial that explains the difference between craft and cosmetic glitter, and how to best apply cosmetic glitter. You can buy things glittery things specially designed for your face and body body from Lush, NYX, Sephora, and Ben Nye, just to name a few.

Space mom would want you to be safe. Go forth and wear glitter (safely)!
