John was a soldier huddled in the trenches facing No Man’s Land, feeling the most wretched he had ever been. He was cold and hungry, overwhelmed with the stench of unwashed bodies and infected wounds, the nearly endless rounds of gunfire and grenade explosions, the screams of the dying.

Sometimes he felt as if he would never again know the taste of bread and a proper cuppa tea, to breathe in air that was not foully tainted by the Enemy’s noxious poisons. Sometimes he felt that they were all under the pitiless gaze of some great Eye, naked in the Dark.

And then he heard an American voice say, “Don’t you understand? This is No Man’s Land. That means no man may cross it.”

And thus, John’s attention was captured by the hooded figure the American was speaking to. She dropped the cloak to reveal armor, that her hands carried a sword and a shield, and she ascended the ladder with steps swift and sure. John would always remember these words, though she herself had never said them aloud, but her actions spoke clear as day:

“I am no man.”

There she stood, a shining figure in the middle of No Man’s Land, facing the Enemy and drawing their fire, beautiful as the dawn, terrible as the sea, stronger than all the foundations of the Earth.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien does not remember how he scrambled up the ladder to follow after her, only that he and his fellow soldiers followed in Her wake, to fight by her side and onwards to victory.

A little girl and her mom were looking at me at the coffee shop this morning and I heard her mom say “go on, it’s ok!” and the little girl shuffled up to me and said “ex-cuse me please, do you have to put on your tattoos by yourself every DAY or does your mom help you?” I am d y i n g

My niece was in the bathroom when I was in the tub and she asked if my tattoos would wash off. I told her they won’t, I’ll have them my whole life.

She asked, “Even when you die?”

I said, “Yes”

She looked me dead in the eye and said, “When you’re space dust your tattoos will be stars”

“WHEN YOU’RE SPACE DUST YOUR TATTOOS WILL BE STARS.“

You never know when you might have to fight an alien.

According to Dean Devlin, Leverage and Stargate inhabit the same universe, and Eliot was on a gate team so he’d know all about Drake’s equation. Just sayin’.

HOLD ON WHAT?!?  W H A T.

… I love everything about this, and this changes everything.

@athousanderrors DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS??

Yes? I mean, I reblogged this a few days ago. :P

They were gonna use Stargate props in the background of a couple eps but it never worked out.

The trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s newest film The Shape of Water dropped today and I urge you all to see it and support it. It’s a dark fairytale about a mute woman who forms a connection with a humanoid sea creature that’s being studied in a lab.

It’s set during the Cold War and stars Michael Shannon and Octavia Spencer, with Sally Hawkins as the lead. Doug Jones is also in it! (I assume he’ll be playing the creature)

Movies like these tend to flop because people don’t care about original inventive films even though they say they do. Del Toro is a true artist and god of cinema and needs continued support, especially from the American fans.

watch the trailer here !

It’s a dark fantasy romance between a mute lady and the creature from the black lagoon. Sign me tHE FUCK UP

so tonight im working super late at an adults-only event at the zoo where it’s basically endless beer and wine tasting and then wandering around the zoo at night. Keepers mainly sit around then we just take turns going up for a circuit through our areas and let me tell you as the night has gone on things have gotten more entertaining. So far I have seen:
-A group of drunk girls legit crying in front of the puffin exhibit because they’re Too Cute
-A dude pointed at a vacant eyed, open mouthed, coldwater fish and, completely deadpan, turned to his friend and went “it’s you”
-overheard a very serious debate on whether or not sea turtles sleep (”Ted you fucking moron everything fuckin sleeps jesus christ”
-A girl stroking her hand back and forth on the glass in front of a chillin Amazon cichlid (idk what part ok freshwater exhibits aint my thing) cooing “It’s just so pretty I want to be it’s friend”
-A man enthusiastically singing a ballad in front of the aquarium with some grand drunk improv like one standout line was “What we doin at the zoOOOoooOOooo? We drinkin a breeEWWWwwwwwwwww!”

-a very harried voice on the radio sighing “we need more captain morgan and vodka at concessions”
-five calls for medics
-three calls for broken glass
-A girl standing on her own in the middle of the shark reef tunnel, staring straight up with an open mouth and arms limp at her sides, oblivious to all the people around her
- “Ahaha. holy shit look at all of it’s legs” said in front of the octopus exhibit
-overheard a loud furious “DID YOU JUST FUCKING AS ME IF THE PENGUINS ARE FAKE?!”
-This exchange on the radio
“Hi concessions to event management? What do we do with the used napkins?”
Long pause, then a disgusted “You throw them away. Because they’re garbage.”
(honestly prayer circle for concessions)
- “holy shit it’s nemo what up dude” (I hear a million variations of “i found nemo!” but this is my favorite so far ok)

“Miedos,” by Elisa Chavez.

This poem was written as part of “Miss Translated,” a chapbook I produced as part of an artistic residency for Town Hall Seattle. (I don’t have any left I’m sorry.) As with La sirena y el pescador, this poem features intentional mistranslation between Spanish and English.

What I think of when I read over this poem is the times my mother has told me her voice sounds different in Spanish. Not better, or worse. Different.

gorgeous.

from The Courtesy Rules Of Blindness

“When you meet me don’t be ill at ease. It will help both of us if you remember these simple points of courtesy:

I’m an ordinary person, just blind. You don’t need to raise your voice or address me as if I were a child. Don’t ask my spouse what I want–“Cream in the coffee?”–ask me.

I may use a long white cane or a guide dog to walk independently; or I may ask to take your arm. Let me decide, and please don’t grab my arm; let me take yours. I’ll keep a half-step behind to anticipate curbs and steps.

I want to know who’s in the room with me. Speak when you enter. Introduce me to the others including children, and tell me if there’s a cat or dog.

The door to a room or cabinet or to a car that is left partially open is a hazard to me.

At dinner I will not have trouble with ordinary table skills.

Don’t avoid words like “see.” I use them too. I’m always glad to see you.

I don’t want pity, but don’t talk about the “wonderful compensations” of blindness. My sense of smell, taste, touch or hearing did not improve when I became blind, I rely on them more and, therefore, may get more information through those senses than you do–that’s all.

If I’m your houseguest, show me the bathroom, closet, dresser, window–the light switch too. I like to know whether the lights are on or off.

I’ll discuss blindness with you if you’re curious, but it’s an old story to me. I have as many other interests as you do.

Don’t think of me as just a blind person. I’m just a person who happens to be blind.

You don’t need to remember some “politically correct” term, “visually impaired”, “sight challenged” etc. Keep it simple and honest, just say blind.

In all 50 states the law requires drivers to yield the right of way when they see my extended white cane. Only the blind may carry white canes. You see more blind persons today walking alone, not because there are more of us, but because we have learned to make our own way.”
